In the context of my research about death, I stumbled this interview with Mario Mantese [transcription : me]. It fits the themes of "absence" of the senses, "switch-off" of the senses. Moreover, On example of Mario Mantese it is easy to study how a certain type of "guru" is on the way ... what's happening on the "meetings" with a guru ... what people are ... expecting ... of ... a ... "Guru" ... generally what happens in this special situation!
Die Frage, die mich beschäftigt, ist: Können MM's "Theorien", nicht despektierlich gemeint sondern als seine persönliche Wesensschau, losgelöst betrachtet werden von dem Auflauf, den er verursacht? - Und: Kann die "Relevanz" solcher persönlichen Wesensschauen "buddhistisch abgetan" werden, was ich vermute.
The question that concerns me is: Can MM's "theories" - without any disrepect, but seen as his personal eidetic vision / intuition of essences - viewed in isolation from the tumult / hype he is causing? - And: Can the "relevance" of such personal visions are "dismissed buddhistically", which I suspect.

Für Mario Mantese erfüllte sich in den 70er Jahren gewissermassen der amerikanische Traum
Er war reich und berühmt. Zusammen mit mit der Popgruppe Heatwave landete er einen Riesenhit: "Boogienight", Sie erinnern sich bestimmt. Über 10 Mio mal wurde diese Platte verkauft. Doch dann, auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Karriere gab es eine herbe Wende. Mario wurde Opfer eines Mordattentats. Ein Unbekannter stach ihm nach einem Galaempfang mitten ins Herz. Mario war klinisch tot, wurde zwei Mal am Herzen operiert, bei einer der Operationen erlitt er einen Schlaganfall und lag wochenlang im Koma. Als er wieder aufwachte, konnte er weder sehen noch sprechen und war vollständig gelähmt. Heute sagt er, durch diese Ereignisse hat er ganz andere Einblicke in Zusammenhänge über Leben und Tod bekommen und vor allen Dingen sei merkwürdiger Weise genau durch diesen herben Schlag sein Herz erst erwacht.
For Mario Mantese the American Dream fulfilled in a way in the 70s: He was rich and famous. Along with the pop group Heatwave, he landed a huge hit, "Boogie Night", you probably remember. It was more than 10 million times sold. But then, at the height of his career, there was a bitter turn. Mario has been the victim of an attempted murder. An unknown person stabbed him after a gala reception in the heart. Mario was clinically dead, had surgery twice on the heart, in one of the operations he suffered a stroke and was in a coma for weeks. When he woke up, he could not see or speak and was completely paralyzed. Today, he says, by these events he got very different insights into the relationships of life and death, and above all in a remarkable way precisely through this bitter blow his heart awaked.

MM: Ja, ja, gehört da dazu.
MM: Yes this is a part of it.
- Gehört dazu. Und dann im November 78 wendete sich das Blatt, ein Unbekannter stach Ihnen mitten ins Herz und sie waren klinisch tot. Dieser Stich ins Herz, jetzt im Rückblick, 20 Jahre später, was hat der für Sie für eine Symbolik?
.. and then in November 78, the tide turned, a stranger stabbed you through the heart, and you were clinically dead. This stab in the heart, now in retrospect, 20 years later, what does it mean for you symbolically.
MM: Also ich würde es etwa so sagen der Stich ins Herz hat mein irdisches Herz geschlossen und mein himmlisches Herz geöffnet. Also, das heißt, in mir hat es eröffnet, was ich heute als sehr sehr wertvoll erachte.
MM: Well, I would say so: the stab to the heart has closed my earthly heart and opened my heavenly heart. So, in other words, it has opened in me, what I consider today to be very very valuable.
Ja - Sie lagen wochenlang im Koma und als Sie wieder aufgewacht sind, konnten Sie nicht sehen, und Sie konnten nicht sprechen und Sie waren gelähmt. Und Sie haben gesagt, dass Sie nicht sehen konnten, hat Ihnen gezeigt, dass Sie in sich selber reinkucken sollen, dass Sie nicht sprechen konnten, dass Sie in sich selber reinhören sollen und dass Sie sich nicht bewegen konnten, dass Sie sich die Zeit auch dafür nehmen.
Das ist eine unglaublich starke Einstellung. Kam das sofort, dass Sie so gedacht haben oder erst mit der Zeit?
Yes - you were in a coma for weeks and when you woke up, you could not see, and you could not speak and you were paralyzed. And you said that you could not see has shown you that you should clean look clearly into yourself, that you could not talk, you should listen to yourself and that you could not move, you should take the time for this. MM: Ich glaub das kam ziehmlich schnell, ja weil, mir wurde sehr schnell bewusst, dass mir niemand helfen konnte. und ich glaube eben auch, wie ich vorhin gesagt habe mit dem Öffnen, [.?.] einfach ein sehr starkes Geschehen. Ich wusste, als ich zurückkam in diese Welt, wusste ich, ich bin nicht dieser Körper. Ich habe ohne diesen Körper gelebt und ich lebe auch jetzt wieder ohne Körper im Körper drin.
MM: I think that came quite quickly, because I realized very quickly that no one could help me. and I think just as well, as I said earlier with that opening myself [.?.] just a very strong event. I knew when I came back to this world ... I knew that I am not this body. I have lived without this body and I live again now without this body inside the body.
MM: Und ich war fast ein Jahr blind. Und alle Ärzte Professoren in England haben gesagt, "Sie werden im Rollstuhl bleiben und blind."
MM: And I was blind for almost a year. Doctors and all professors in England have said that "You will remain in a wheelchair and blind."
MM: Aber die Zeit hab ich genutzt und einfach ein völlig veränderte innere Sicht bekommen zu meinem Körper und zur Welt.
MM: But I have used the time and i just got a completely different perspective/sight to my inner body and the world.
Ja - über die wir auch gleich noch sprechen, aber, wie, Mario, haben Sie das Tot-Sein in Erinnerung.
Yes, but how, Mario, you remember "beeing dead" ?

MM: Ja - das Tot ... Entschuldigung .... man hört doch einige Lacher [.?.] Das Tot-Sein hab ich empfunden als etwas sehr sehr Lebendiges. Man denkt [?], der Tod sei etwas endültiges - ich habe etwas sehr lebendiges, tiefes und interessantes empfunden.
MM: Yes - the dead ... sorry .... one hears some laughs [.?.] Beeing dead i perceived as something very vital. You think [?] that death is something final, i felt something very deep and vital and interesting.
Sie sagen auch, dass es in dieser Welt, in der es keine Körper gibt in diesem sogenannten Jenseits aber nicht so ist, dass die Aufgaben, die man hier nicht löst, plötzlich alle wegfallen. und dass es dann nur Freude und nur Frieden gibt. So ist es nicht. Alles was man hier nicht löst, nimmt man mit.
You also say that in this world where there is no body in this so-called afterlife it is not like this, that the tasks that you will not solve here and now, suddenly all disappear and then there is only joy and peace. It is not like this. All what you don't solve here, you will take with you.
MM: Also meines Erachtens ist das absolut so, ja, weil der Zustand in dem wir sind ist ja das was wir mitnehmen. wir können ja nicht hier etwas sein und drüben etwas anderes Wir nehmen das was wir sind, nehmen wir mit in die andere Welt.
MM: Well, I think that's absolutely true, yes, because the state in which we are is this, what we take with us. We can not here be something and over there and something else. We take with us what we are into the other world.
Klar, das ist sehr wichtig.
Of course this is very important.
MM: Das ist wichtig, ja.
MM: This is important, yes.
Dann haben Sie gesagt, dass diese Toderfahrung für Sie wie eine Reinigung war und Sie hätten, Zitat,
"Ihre dunklen Seiten gewissermassen ausgeschwitzt".
Then you said that this experience of death was kind of cleaning for you and you would have - quote: - "sweated out your dark side so to say."
MM: Ausgeschwitzt, ja, ja.
MM: Exuded, [sweated out], yes, yes.
Was meinen Sie damit?
What do you mean by this?
MM: Das ist natürlich etwas sehr komplexes, aber man kann sagen, ich habe ... durch sehr dunkle Welten bin ich gewandert. Es ist nicht ein Traum. Es war eine Wirklichkeit, wie ich jetzt hier in diesem Raum sitze, hab ich sehr dunkle Welten durchlaufen und hab immer erkannt warum dass ich da bin und durch dieses Erkennen haben sich alte Sachen abglöst.
MM: Of course it's something very complex, but you can say I have ... through very dark worlds I have wandered. It's not a dream. It was a reality, as I sit here in this room, I went through very dark worlds and have always recognized that why I'm here and through this recognition old stuff has been solved.
Und was meinen Sie mit "alten Sachen"? Sie sagen, Sie hätten heute keine negativen Gefühle mehr,
keinen Hass mehr, keine Eifersucht mehr, keinen Neid mehr.
And what do you mean with "old stuff"? You say you don't have anymore negative feelings today, no hatred, no more jealousy, no more envy.
MM: Genau diese Kräfte haben dort Gestalt angenommen, haben ein anderes Gesicht erhalten und als ich erkannt habe, dass ich in meiner eigenen [.?.] es wirklich erkannt habe, ist der Hass von mir abgeflossen auch die Wut und auch alle Rachegefühle sind weg.
MM: [.?.] Exactly these forces there have taken shape, have received a new face and when I realized that I really recognized in my own [.?.] , the hatred flowed away from me, the anger and all the feelings of revenge are away.
Haben Sie noch Ängste?
Do you still have any fears?
MM: Es gibt so eine Art ... ich wüsste nicht genau vor was ich Angst habe. Ich habe keine Ängste in dem Sinne. Natürlich es gibt da so eine Aussage, wo man sagt, ich habe nicht Angst vor dem Tod, aber vielleicht ein bisschen Angst vor dem Sterben. Man weiss nie wie man stirbt. [...] Ich bin bereit jeden Moment zu gehen.
MM: It's a kind of ... I do not know exactly what I'm afraid. I have no fears in that sense. Of course there is such a statement where you say, I do not fear death, but maybe i am a bit afraid of dying. You never know how you will die.[...] I'm ready to go at any moment.
Diese neuen Erkenntnisse, die Sie gewonnen haben durch diese Erfahrung, Mario, sind ganz wichtig. Die erste Erkenntnis war, Sie sind nicht ihr Körper, wir alle sind nicht unser Körper.
These findings, which you have gained through this experience, Mario, are very important. The first insight was, that you are not your body, that we all are not our bodies.
MM: Ja, in dem Sinne schon, wir leben im Körper drin, aber im Grunde ist der Mensch nicht das Gefäss.
MM: Yes, in that sense already, we live in a body in there, but basically the man is not the vessel.
Sondern was sind wir? Sind wir ewig?
But what are we? Are we eternal?
MM: Wir sind etwas ganz Gewaltiges und ich möchte das hier nicht zerpflücken, weil jeder muss es selbst entdecken.
MM: We are an enormous something but I don't want to dissect this here, because everyone has to discover it oneself.
Ja, Und was ist der Sinn unseres Lebens aufgrund Ihrer Erfahrung, was [...] ?
Yes, and what the purpose of our lives is based on your experience, what [...]?
MM: Ich frage mich immer, muss das Leben einen Sinn haben, ist nicht das Leben selbst schon ein Sinn? Ich glaube, man muss sehr aufpassesn, den Unsinn des Lebens zu erkennen, nicht den Sinn.
MM: I always wonder, must have life a meaning/sense, is not life itself a sense? I think you have to be very careful aufpassesn, not to recognize the nonsense of life, not the sense of life.
Was ist der... größte Unsinn des Lebens? -
What is the ... biggest nonsense in life? -
MM: ... ja, das muss jeder selber erkennen.
MM: ... that everyone has to find out for oneself.
Ist es das,worum es geht, also um Selbsterkenntnis?
Is it that what is at stake, to know yourself?
MM: ... und ich glaub schon auch zentral, dass Wort "Liebe" einen großen Wert bekommen hat in meinem Leben, nicht nur Liebe zu meinem Nächsten, sondern Liebe im Allgemeinen. Das ist etwas sehr Tiefes und Großes.
MM: ... and I think also mainly, that the word "love" has played a big role in my life, not just my love for my neighbor, but love in general. It's something very deep and big.
MM: Wenn man von Liebe spricht hat man immer so einen schalen Geschmack. Man muss es schon in einem größeren Rahmen in sich entdecken.
MM: If you speak of love, you always have a kind of stale taste. You have to discover it for yourself within a bigger frame/context.
Also Sie haben durch diese Erfahrung mehr Liebe entwickelt zum Leben, zu allen Dingen.
So you have developed through this experience more love for life, for all things.
MM: Nicht "mehr" - Ich habe entdeckt, was es ist.
MM: Not "more" - I discovered what it is.
Und was ist es?
And what is it?
MM: Das kann ich Ihnen ... in der Kürze jetzt nicht verraten ...
MM: I can't tell you this ... in short terms ...
MM: Ich kann nur sagen, ich habe das Lieblose in mir gelöscht und habe eine Kraft entdeckt, die ich mit dem Wort Liebe benennen würde.
MM: I can only say, I deleted the non-loving inside of me and have discovered a power, which I would designate with the word love.
Das verstehen wir, glaube ich, alle.
This we understand, i think, all of us.
Sie schreiben Bücher, das neueste Buch heißt "im Land der Stille", da kommt ein Meister zu Wort, der voller Weisheiten ist. Gibt es diesen Meister wirklich?
You are writing books, the latest book is called "the land of silence". There a master comes to speak, who is full of wisdom. Is this master real?
MM: Ja, diesen Meister gibt es wirklich. "Im Land der Stille" ist ein sehr, sehr besonderes Buch, es ist mein fünftes und ist eine Begegnung im Himalaya mit einem Meister. Es ist gar nicht so lang auf dem Markt und hat
schon einen sehr großen Nachklang gefunden.
MM: Yes, these are really master it. "In the Land of Silence" is a very, very special book, it's my fifth and it is about an encounter with a master in the Himalayas. It is not so long in the market and has already found a huge echo.
okay - Eine ganz wichtige Geschichte ist, dass in dem Buch steht, das Wichtigste ist, dass die Worte auch Taten sind. Ist das was Sie auch leben?
okay - a very important thing in that book is, that the most important thing is that the words are also deeds. Is it this what you live?
MM: Also das Wichtigste? - Da sind so viele wichtigen Sachen drin. Sie haben eins herausgenommen. Ich würde sagen: Worte müssen Taten sein. Das ist das Wichtigste.
MM: The most important? - There are many important things in this book. You took one of them out. I would say: Words have to be deeds. This is the most important.
Ein letztes noch, Mario, Sie schreiben Bücher, Sie veranstalten Seminare, warum tun Sie das alles?
One last thing, Mario, you write books, you do seminars, why do you do that all?
MM: Es ist mein Leben, es ist so: ich arbeite nicht etwas anderes als das was ich bin.
und meine Arbeit, das sind diese großen Zusammenkünfte [...]
MM: It is my live, it is like this: i don't work something else then that what i am - and my work are my big darshans [... ]
MM: Ich stelle mir Fragen, zum Beispiel: Woher kommt das Leben?
MM: I ask myself questions such as: From where life is coming?
Woher kommt das Leben?
From where life is coming?
MM: Oder: Wie wirklich ist Zeit?
MM: Or: How real is time?
Wie wirklich ist Zeit?
How real is time?
MM: Wird die Zeit jemals enden?
MM: Will time ever end?
Und wird die Zeit jemals enden? - ich denke Nein?

MM: Das müssen wir herausfinden.
